Admit it … selling something online, from the comfort of your own home office, would be great. More specifically, selling something from your own home office that you don’t have to stock, that you don’t have to ship, and where you don’t have to deal with customers would be great. This sounds like the perfect job, doesn’t it?
But what if you have nothing to sell? Let’s say you’re not an author, and you are not a professor, nor do you manufacture anything. Can you still produce money by selling things part time from home?
Yes, and it’s called Affiliate Marketing. And it works something like this:
A person registers with some company’s (merchant’s) Affiliate Program (retailers such as Barnes & Noble, Amazon, Vonage, etc). This person then “drives” or “refers” Internet traffic to these merchants. When a referred visitor purchases some product, say a book or allotment of software, the person who referred the visitor is paid a commission for generating the sale.
The person or company that owns the product will be responsible for stocking it, getting it to the customer and dealing with any customer service issues. You, as the affiliate, have nothing more to do with the transaction except cashing your check. What a job!
You’re first step is to decide what to market.
Deciding what to market has been made a lot easier by the emergence of Affiliate Networks. Affiliate Networks are also know as “Pay for Performance Networks” or “Marketing Solutions Providers”. They all provide basically the same service, which is to allow affiliates to search for and market the products of the companies (“merchants”) in their network.
The process works basically like this:
1. A person who wishes to sell something signs up with an Affiliate Network. They now become an “affiliate”.
2. The affiliate searches or browses the Affiliate Network for products that they think they might be able to sell.
3. When the affiliate finds a product they want to sell, they are given their own “affiliate link” to the website where a customer can purchase the product. This link is encoded with the affiliate’s uniquely identifying number.
4. The affiliate sends or “drives” potential customers to the company’s website via their affiliate link.
5. If a customer purchases the product then the affiliate gets credit for that sale and earns a commission.
6. At the end of the pay period (defined by the Affiliate Network) a single paycheck consolidating all commissions for all products sold is issued to the affiliate.
“Driving” customers to the company’s website is where the real fun resides. There are two main methods for driving online traffic to these companies:
• Compose a large or miniature website. Place various links, banners, and products on this website. When your visitors click through on these links and purchase a product you will get a commission.
• Send potential customers directly to the companies using Pay-Per-Click (PPC) networks. When these people purchase a product you will get a commission.
It takes more time to build a website with all of the affiliate links. However, you can use your website to “pre-sell” the company and/or products that you are promoting. In addition, you can capture the email addresses of your visitors. These can be customary later to offer more products and generate even more sales. Affiliate Networks are free to join.
They originate their money by charging the merchants a percentage of their sales. Some networks will allow just about anyone to join, while others are more particular … maybe requiring that you beget a website that receives a certain number of visitors each month.

• LinkShare
ClickBank is one of the easy ones to join. They offer mostly downloadable products (i.e.; ebooks, software, etc.). They also allow you to browse their product directory before you signup. The Internet really is a powerful medium, it gives swear to the average consumer, and levels the playing field for small companies. No longer is having a big marketing budget key (not that it mild doesn’t work) but a good clever ad will out-sell a “carpet-bombing” ad-campaign any day. Here are 5 simple ways you can integrate an online marketing campaign on a show-string budget and some spare time.
1) Facebook
Facebook is a social-media website used the world over for people to keep in contact with their friends, family and co workers. Not only that but users utilize the site to understanding events, share content and communicate, as well as play games to kill time . As a business we can take advantage of this virtual market place and draw in new customers, as well as increase the volume of sales to current customers.
There are two key ways for a business to use facebook: fan pages and account creation.
The first, and most simple way requires a basic facebook account. From there all you need to do is type in “Pages” on the search bar and click on the “Ads and Pages” application. Click “Create a page” and fill out all the needed info, then suggest the page to friends. The “fan-page” basically works as a stand alone story, however it can’t message or add users itself, but people can suggest their friends add the page. It’s also a lot simpler to maintain, however there are some draw-backs. Firstly, as of yet there’s no integration for fan pages with applications that mix social media feeds, such as Tweet Deck or Hoot Suite, with that you can’t link say a twitter account with a fan page. All this basically means is that you’ll have to come in and post updates yourself rather than posting to one service and being done with it.
The second, and less often used way is to create the business its own facebook account, all you need is an email address. This route is preferable to the business who would like to link services such as twitter and tumblr, so they can post to one space and have the update go out everywhere. As a bonus, this route allows you to have communication from the business’s name rather than messaging people through a personal account. Another bonus is that you can use mobile web to update the account, while you may not be able to update your fan page depending on your mobile web service. So if your company largely exists in places you don’t always have access to a computer, this may be a better route for you. One significant draw-back is that you’ll have to score people as friends, and it’s a lot trickier for people to suggest your business to their friends. So either route you take, expect a time investment.
2) Twitter
Along with facebook there’s another new service called “Twitter”. What twitter is, in it’s essence is to answer the questions “What are you thinking about right now? ” or “What are you doing right now? ” the answer must be completed in 140 characters or less. The creators picked this number for two key reasons: It allows tweets to be sent as text messages to their users (should you opt in) and it keeps it brief, which is perfect for the information age we’re living in where often times people won’t read more than a few sentences.
The benefits of twitter are quite vast, with the main benefit of twitter being that other social media platforms like Myspace require that you accept a user as a friend in order for them to see your updates in their news feed. Twitter instead uses a system of “Followers” someone stumbles upon your page and if they like it, they follow you; all you have to do is regularly update. Another benefit of Twitter is that it’s great at integration. Both facebook and Myspace allow you to update your status by tweeting (and vice-versa) and sites like Tumblr and Twitpic (a photo sharing site) will post your updates to twitter automatically. In addition to that there is a myriad of free applications out there that allow you to manage your twitter. You can even write tweets in advance and schedule them to be sent.
3) Blogs
The next device is a simple and time-tested approach to business. Keeping your customers and stake-holders up-to-date with a blog. There’s thousands of blog sites out there to use, but I personally prefer Tumblr for its ease of use and lack of annoying advertisements. Another great bonus of tumblr is that it’s highly integratable with other social-media, it will automatically update your twitter and facebook to tell all your friends when you’ve posted an update, and link them to said update.
The key to a successful blog (and any social-media really) is to take a bit of the focus off of yourself and share content that might be interesting to your customers. For example, if you’re a bike shop and a new trail opens up you should share that. Don’t just post “Come in and say you saw our twitter and get $5 off!” while that can have some effect it gets old fast and you’ll soon see your numbers slump. Hold it interesting, and update regularly, at least 2-3 times a week.
4) Create Buzz
This idea is a bit more abstract, than the previous suggestions. Basically your goal is to create word of mouth advertising in as cheap of a way as possible. One simple solution here is to create something out of the ordinary and place it where people will see it. While a effect on the side of the road may not attract a second look, a 15 foot tall snow-man might. If you can create something that becomes a land-mark people WILL talk about it, and people may approach to see it for themselves, or even better rob pictures with it, which furthers the buzz.
What does this have to do with the internet? Simple, you can use your twitter, facebook or blog as a jumping off point. In the previous example we built a 15 tall snow-man outside our shop. From here we can take a picture and upload it to our Tumblr, which sends out a spy on our facebook and twitter, and BANG people start showing up to see the thing. The key is to include a “time-hammer”, something that provides a sense of urgency, and gets customers to take action. Going back to our snow man example, he’s obviously going to melt at some point, which is a Time-Hammer, but we can take it one step further by making the thing a sale “10% off until the snow-man melts”. You’ve just given people something interesting to talk about, a reason to come into your store and a time-hammer to get them to do it now. This is how you successful manufacture a hype-based marketing promotion.
5) User created content.
The last method of the internet is similar to building buzz, but takes all the creativity on the businesses end out of it. Basically, all you do is come up with some prizes, say a gift-card or monetary prize, and then advertise a contest over facebook/twitter/your blog for a user-made ad. From there all you have to do is sit-back and peruse the entries pile up on youtube. The important key here is to have the winner be chosen by a polling system, this way the contributors of the ad will tell their friends to watch the ad and vote for them, creating a free marketing campaign for your product or store.

If you are going to be competitive, want to or need to touch with as many people in the least amount of time, want to be successful in the telemarketing, lead generation, business development, sales and marketing industry, you’ll inevitably have to consider using an auto or semi-auto dialing solution: a tool that will dial more numbers for you in less time with less effort than manual dialing. Some systems will increase dialing productivity by 30-80% and will even help you manage your data.

To give perspective, I am a business development person (Telemarketer with collateral tools and services) and I work my contracts every day. I have had the privilege of trying a few different predictive dialer applications while running my home based call center. Some are astonishing (I am still using my SpitFire Predictive Dialer, I fancy it). One that gave me a very hard time was EVS7’s Dolphin Power Dialer. This one caused me to lose 3 days of work trying to get it to work . It turned out to be more or less incompatible with my operating system. On the bright side, they did refund all of my money. You’ll need to research, understand the capabilities and sample a few out before deciding.
I’ve effect this list together which includes what I call the predictive dialer, power dialer, auto dialer or call center applications. Different people call them different things. The factors that I focused on their stability, the hasten at which they dial, sound quality, cost effectiveness and caller details.
These solutions range from very affordable, stand alone systems to very exotic and expensive that I did not even get a chance to try as they where out of my price range. I have included them because they come up towards the top in search engines so I can’t overlook them. My ratings of the products that I have not tried are based on what I have read up on what others who have aged them have written about their experience and some technical information from tech papers.
1. Five9’s Virtual Call Center – Hosted, SIP based VOIP, Web based. No long term contracts; there is a set up fee, familiar interface and set up. Good sound quality. Great for someone that doesn’t want to have their solution. $$ +++
2. Spitfire Predictive Dialer – Stand alone. SIP based VOIP. An additional server may be required, feature rich, easy to use and set up. Compared to hosted solutions the product amortizes in about 10 months, organic growth as you add on more agents or resell the service. I love it because I can use it to provide a hosted solution to my clients. Best professional value for a low cost, $$$ +++++
3. Voicent’s Predictive Dialer – Stand alone. SIP based VOIP and LAN. Low cost. I tried this on the trial basis and I liked it. It has a feature rich interface, familiar and easy to use and to have residence up and running in a short period of time. Seems like a great value. $$ +++
4. SolusOne’s Virtual Call Center – Hosted, SIP based LAN. Monthly fee, spot up fee plus LD. Feature rich, Simple exhibit. Easy to exhaust with an easy and familiar interface and set up. $$$ easy to exhaust ++++
5. Volcalcom’s Predictive Dialer Solution – Hosted, VOIP Web Based. Feature rich – more than most systems offer. $$$$ ++
6. Callfire’s Cloud Call Center - as low as 2$ an hour including LD for the light version. The heed goes up the more features you ad. An easy set up as an administrator/user and easy for your callers to log in. For an example of an escalated cost and where you’ll need to be vigilant is the transferred call, when a call is transferred to another person you will be billed at 8.5¢ per minute. Not abominable but it can get expensive depending upon your requirement and usage. This product is more of a service. Pay as you go is a chilly idea. service $$ +++
7. EVS7’s Power Dialers – Stand alone. VOIP or LAN. Low cost. Easy to use, set up is a bit more complicated than most. Many of EV&’s default settings are only familiar to them and will require a fair amount of customer befriend. I wished it worked as well as advertised. Didn’t integrate with my operating system. If you are running XP or Vista it may work well for you. $ +
8. Insidesales.com’s Predictive Dialer 2.0 – VOIP Web based. Monthly fee and set up. Feature rich. Really easy to exhaust and set up. Easy arrangement to try them out with their 1000 free trial minutes, very wintry auto call back features. $$$ ++++
9. Vanillasoft – VOIP, Web Based. Monthly fee. Free 30 day trial. Easy to use and space up. $$$ +++
10. Skype – Not really a predictive solution but allows for fast dialing on the cheap. Voip (obviously) and with a plug in for MS office you can click dial in Excel or Word. Telify Firefox plug-in allows you to click dial apt off of a website. Procure Pamela Call Recorder to narrate your calls and bag a free CRM like ZOHO to help manage your data. This is a good solution for people who are starting out and don’t have enough capital or credit to but a fully functional solution.
